Frequently Asked Questions?

  • Counseling is a a collaborative relationship between a trained mental health provider and a client that enables the client to identify goals, to gain insights, learn tools and strategies, gain support and strengthen their self awareness.

The counseling process enables the client to experience personal growth during challenging times in life. Working with a counselor will provide clients the opportunity to explore thoughts and feelings to gain a deeper understanding of themselves in order to make meaningful choices and gain skills and tools to face and overcome challenging life circumstances.

Because counseling is a process and not a one-off activity, clients should expect to commit to at least 5 sessions to reap the benefits of this process.

  • It is important to recognize that counseling is a process and not a one time activity. Each person goes through the process with a different time frame. However for common mental health issues best practice is to give yourself between 5-10 sessions. If you have a specific time frame please feel free to share that with your therapist. This will enable both of you to work on achievable goals.

The first session is what is called an intake session. In this session the therapist will seek to get to know you as a person. The purpose is to build a relationship based on empathy. This session in important to discover your purpose for seeking help at this time and if you have specific outcomes or time frames in mind. If you don’t that is ok too, the therapist has been trained to explore that with you.

Subsequent sessions will focus on understanding the issues that you are presenting and working together with you and supporting you towards your desired outcomes.

All counseling should end with a termination session. When you feel ready, you and your therapist can discuss ending your counseling relationship. This session will be both a feedback session and an opportunity to consolidate and celebrate the gains made through this process. Your therapist will also use this session to give you their feedback on your process together and make recommendations for ensuring you do not lose what you have worked hard to gain.

  • If you feel stuck in your life whether it is with a situation or in a relationship, counseling is especially helpful.

Counseling is also beneficial for anyone who would like to understand more about themself, their relationships ,and their life experiences. Through counseling, you may gain awareness and insights and develop new perspectives. Counseling is a safe space to process and discuss your thoughts and feelings that cannot be shared anywhere else. You will learn tools to manage difficult emotions and develop coping strategies to make peace with painful experiences.

The goal is for you to be empowered at handling issues whenever and wherever they arise and for you to live a meaningful life that is authentic to you as a person.
